Movie time...

I saw both of these movies last week, and both were good for different reasons. Avatar in 3d was completely worth it and was both awesome and moving at times due to it's heavy handed reflection on society at large. Yes, it's not Shakespeare but compared to the crap Hollywood usually chucks at us--this should be honored with awards. But will the Oscars ever honor a sci-fi movie in any real way? Um, my "magic 8 ball" says no. Sci-fi movies can't even win for best costume design these days. I remember when the Star Wars Phantom Menace got nominated for costume design and I think it lost to some BS period piece movie. Hmm, let's see, one was a space opera with completely innovative designs that were made from scratch, and for the period piece that won, they went to the studio closet and pulled out a bunch of period costumes that we've seen in a hundred other period movies--nothing new. I'm still pissed Barbarella never won anything! :) Well, anyway, Avatar is making millions so no matter if it gets any serious nominations. Go see it if you haven't and if it's sold out, then go see Sherlock. Holmes was fun, with a very slight tongue-in-cheek homo vibe betwen Sherlock and Watson.
